Product Description

"Josh Dorfman’s perspective is a leading voice for anyone involved in new consumer-based environmentalism.”—Tom Arnold, TerraPass

We can’t all camp out in old-growth forests, lying down in front of the bulldozers. And it’s not only that we’re too busy: Some of us just don’t want our fabulous threads to get caked with mud.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t care passionately about the environment. Luckily, the days when becoming environmentally aware entailed eating bread that tasted like dirt, wearing clothes that looked like frayed burlap sacks, and spending summer vacations assailing whaling ships with Greenpeace are passing away. It is now perfectly possible (and increasingly easy) to be well fed, well coiffed, well dressed, and well traveled while remaining deeply committed to an ecologically sustainable lifestyle.

In The Lazy Environmentalist, Josh Dorfman—host of the Sirius Satellite Radio program of the same name—provides comprehensive guidance to fashion-forward consumers who are as concerned about the long-term health of our planet as they are about the design of their bathroom fixtures. Covering topics that range from clothing to electronic gadgetry, home decor to recreation, and gardening to financial investment, Dorfman lets us know which trends to watch and which eco-conscious products—cars, toothbrushes, cell phones, pet accessories—to buy. Green, it turns out, can be an extremely stylish color.

"Every day most of us have to choose between products that either look the same or do the same thing. So why not buy the product that causes the least harm to the planet? The Lazy Environmentalist is a useful guide toward making the right decisions."
- Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner, Patagonia, Inc.

"Everything you always wanted to know about greener living but were afraid to spend the rest of your life researching. Here's a great start."
- Chris Paine, writer and director, Who Killed the Electric Car?

“Instead of thinking about it ... DO IT. Buy this amazing book and get the scoop on products and ways to take care of this great planet. Become part of the movement that is loving the earth the way it truly deserves to be cared for!”
-Mariel Hemingway, actress and author of Healthy Living from the Inside Out

  • Rating Advertisements for "green" stuff  Jul 11, 2007 (49 of 71 found this helpful)

This book is basically about living green without making "green" sacrifices. Much of the book is about what and where to buy this and that, ranging the whole gamut. Unfortunately, this book seems much more of a sourcebook as to where to buy stuff than actually telling you how to make a difference besides doing selective consumption. However, I see his mantra of "being green without the strings attached" as being a bit hypocritical and selfish. True, you can have you cake and eat it too, but for example is it really helpful having hybrid SUVs that get only marginally better mileage? We need to change behaviors on all levels (not just those who can afford the nice green things) and letting the market decide is not the end all. IMHO, government regulation is a far more effective tool than a relatively small segment of our population making better consumption choices.

  • Rating Great Affordable and Easy to Use Resource!  May 15, 2007 (12 of 14 found this helpful)

I think anyone who is the least bit interested in being environmentally friendy would want to have this affordable and easy to use book on their bookshelves. I have been immersed professionally in sustainable furnishings for years and it contains eco-friendly furniture sources that I was not aware of! It lists, with brief descriptions, stylish, eco-friendly options for a wide range of purchases ranging from clothes to travel.

  • Rating Not worth the paper its printed on  Aug 23, 2007 (12 of 18 found this helpful)

I was extremely disappointed in this book. Excessive consumerism is not green. All this book discussed was things to buy and where to buy them. If you really want to start learning about green living, get The Green Book: The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time instead.

  • Rating Good resource  Aug 1, 2007 (7 of 10 found this helpful)

This is a good resource to use when you'd like to find ways to help the environment without changing everything about your life. I'm able to pick it up and read a chapter or segment at a time that's relevent to what I need at that moment.

  • Rating An Inspiring and Practical Guide  May 19, 2007 (5 of 6 found this helpful)

When I tavel to a new area around the globe, I might grab Fodors or Lonely Planet. For my journey to living an eco friendly lifestyle, all I need is Josh Dorfman's book. It's loaded with all the practical knowledge one needs to get started living green!
